What is a signature scent?

A signature scent is not simply a fragrance chosen from a shelf.

It is developed around a brief only you could give us: a memory, a mood, a brand identity or a sense of place. The result is a fragrance shaped around something specific to you, your brand or the experience you are creating.

We work from our Cape Town studio using premium fragrance materials and a library built over years of formulation and scent development.

Every project moves through the same principles of care, regardless of scale: considered development, honest timelines and a fragrance created with its intended use in mind. Development typically spans 12 months or more from brief to shelf, depending on the complexity of the project.

Two ways to create with KITA

We offer two pathways into signature scent development.

Both begin with a discovery conversation, where we listen to your brief, understand the intended use of the fragrance and recommend the development pathway best suited to your project.

Origin

A custom fragrance developed from our studio fragrance library.

Origin draws on our established materials and fragrance library, allowing the development process to move more efficiently while still being shaped around your individual brief.

It is suited to a first signature scent, a smaller brand or a project where development time and commercial accessibility are important.

The finished fragrance is refined through a collaborative sampling process. Formula ownership remains with KITA, with agreed exclusivity maintained through an annual raw fragrance commitment.

Signature

A completely original fragrance developed from the ground up for your brief.

Signature is our full fragrance development pathway.

The formula is created from raw fragrance materials specifically around your brief, with a broader development and sampling process allowing for deeper creative exploration.

It is suited to established brands, hospitality projects and clients seeking a fragrance created entirely around their identity, intended use and longer-term fragrance plans.

Formula ownership remains with KITA unless a formal formula buyout is agreed. A full buyout option is available for clients who require ownership of the completed fragrance formula.

Which pathway is right for you?

Neither pathway is priced publicly.

Every fragrance project carries different creative, technical and commercial requirements. We would rather understand your brief properly than quote against assumptions.

During your discovery conversation, we will talk you through the relevant pathway and recommend the approach best suited to what you are creating.

How the process works

Development begins once we understand your brief in full, whether that is a personal story, a brand identity or a hospitality experience. From brief to shelf, the full process typically takes 12 months or more.

From there, we move through rounds of fragrance sampling together, refining the direction and formula until the fragrance is approved.

Once the final formula has been approved, we can carry your fragrance into the agreed finished product, developed and produced within our studio, without needing to bring in a separate manufacturer.

Fragrance documentation, including safety data and allergen declarations, is compiled as part of the development process. Our fragrance development and production practices are guided by GMP principles and applicable IFRA standards.

Where independent stability, compatibility or product safety testing is required, this is arranged through our appointed laboratory partner and quoted separately for the client’s account.

Packaging is sourced locally within South Africa. We do not import packaging on a client’s behalf. This allows us to work with realistic lead times and maintain clearer oversight of the components used in the finished product.

This is separate from our Bespoke Manufacturing service, which is designed for brands who already have a product concept and are looking for production, rather than fragrance development from a brief.

Yes. We develop signature scents for brands, hotels and hospitality spaces across South Africa. A fragrance may be carried into fine fragrance, candles, reed diffusers, room and linen mists or other agreed fragrance applications.

What is the difference between Origin and Signature?
Origin develops a custom fragrance from our established studio fragrance library. Signature is developed from raw fragrance materials specifically around the client’s brief. Formula ownership and exclusivity conditions differ between the two pathways and are discussed during the discovery process.

Where is KITA Fragrances based?
KITA Fragrances develops and manufactures fragrance from our Cape Town studio in South Africa. Packaging for bespoke projects is sourced locally within South Africa.
