Scent Development

Custom fragrance development for Individuals,Brands,ย  hotels, lodges, guesthouses, restaurants, spas and hospitality spaces across South Africa.

A guest may not remember the exact shade of the walls or the music playing when they arrived. Scent works differently. It can become part of how a place is remembered, from the quiet familiarity of reception to the fragrance a returning guest recognises before they have quite placed why.

At KITA, we develop fragrance around the experience you have already built.

Your property, its setting, its character and the way you want guests to feel give us the starting point. From there, we develop a fragrance that can become part of the property itself and, where required, carry through into scenting, guest products, retail and gifting.

We’ve answered some of the questions hospitality clients ask us most before beginning a fragrance project.

What is a signature scent for a hospitality space?

A hospitality signature scent is a fragrance developed specifically around a property, its identity and the experience it creates for its guests.

It may draw from the landscape surrounding the property, its architecture and materials, its history, the atmosphere you have created or simply the feeling you want guests to associate with being there.

The aim isn’t simply to make a space smell good.

It is to create a fragrance that belongs there.

Can KITA create a signature scent for my hotel, lodge or property?

Yes. KITA develops custom fragrances for hospitality properties from our Cape Town studio.

We work with hotels, lodges, guesthouses, restaurants, spas and other hospitality spaces across South Africa.

You don’t need to arrive knowing which fragrance notes you want.

Tell us about the property. Where it is. What surrounds it. What guests experience when they arrive. What makes the property recognisably yours and what you would like them to remember when they leave.

We begin there.

What if we don’t need a custom fragrance?

Not every property needs to develop its own fragrance.

The Studio Collection is KITA’s in-house fragrance collection for hospitality, offering eight existing KITA fragrances that can be ordered across our bulk hospitality range.

It is a more direct route for properties that want a considered fragrance and product range without going through custom fragrance development.

If you want the fragrance itself to be developed specifically around your property, our Origin and Signature pathways are designed for that.

How is a hospitality signature scent developed?

Every hospitality fragrance begins with a brief.

We ask about the property, its setting, the guest experience and the role you would like fragrance to play.

Once we understand the project, we recommend either our Origin or Signature development pathway based on the level of fragrance development required.

Your fragrance then moves through rounds of sampling and refinement.

You smell. Your team responds. We listen.

We refine from there until the final fragrance is approved.

What is the difference between Origin and Signature?

KITA offers two pathways for custom fragrance development.

Origin begins with KITA’s established fragrance library. We use your brief to develop and refine a fragrance direction for your property through a collaborative sampling process.

Signature is our more extensive fragrance-development pathway. The fragrance is composed from raw fragrance materials around your brief, giving us greater creative scope to build something specifically around the property, its identity and the intended fragrance programme.

You don’t need to decide which pathway you need before contacting us.

Once we understand the project, we can recommend the most appropriate route.

How does scent become part of the guest experience?

Fragrance can form part of a single moment or move through several touchpoints across a property.

It may begin at reception, become part of a guest room, sit quietly within a spa or public area, or leave with a guest through a candle, reed diffuser, room and linen mist or fine fragrance created for gifting or retail.

The goal isn’t to make every space smell the same.

We consider where fragrance belongs and how it should behave in each part of the guest experience.

We develop the fragrance first. Then we consider where it needs to live.

Can one signature scent be used across different fragrance products?

In many cases, yes, but not automatically.

A fragrance that performs well in ambient scenting may need adjustment before it works as intended in a candle, reed diffuser, room and linen mist or fine fragrance.

Different applications place different technical demands on a fragrance.

Where adaptation, compatibility work or independent testing is required, we explain this as part of the project scope.

This allows the fragrance identity to remain recognisable while each application is developed for its intended use.

Can KITA scent the property as well as develop the fragrance?

Yes.

Signature scent development creates the fragrance itself. Ambient scenting is one way that fragrance can then become part of the physical space.

KITA offers scenting solutions for hospitality spaces, including the Electromistโ„ข scent machine, where appropriate for the property and fragrance programme.

The requirements of a reception area may be very different from those of a guest room, spa or smaller public space. We consider the area, coverage requirements and intended fragrance experience before recommending a scenting solution.

Can KITA create products using our hospitality fragrance?

Yes.

Once the fragrance has been approved, we can develop agreed applications and manufacture fragranced products in small batches from our Cape Town studio.

Depending on the project, this may include candles, reed diffusers, room and linen mists and fine fragrance for use within the property, gifting or retail.

The intended application matters. A product created for use in a guest room has a different role from one being developed for retail, and we consider the production requirements and applicable testing before moving into manufacture.

Where are KITA hospitality fragrances developed and produced?

Fragrances are developed at our Cape Town studio.

Once the fragrance has been approved, KITA can carry it through into agreed finished products, allowing fragrance development and small-batch manufacture to remain with one fragrance partner.

Our fragrance development and production practices are guided by GMP principles and applicable IFRA standards.

Where bespoke packaging is required, packaging is sourced locally within South Africa. KITA does not import packaging on a client’s behalf.

How do we begin a hospitality fragrance project?

Begin with your hospitality fragrance brief.

Tell us about the property, the experience you create for your guests and where you see fragrance becoming part of it.

You don’t need to know whether Signature or The Atelier is right for the project before contacting us.

We’ll review your brief before your discovery conversation and use it to understand the property, the intended applications and the scope of the fragrance program.
